2017 Syracuse Jazz Fest Announcement

35th Annual Event Taking Place This Summer

June will be here before you know it and with it comes the ever-popular Syracuse Jazz Fest. Festival founder and executive producer Frank Malfitano stopped by Bridge Street to talk about the excitement that is surrounding this year's 35th anniversary.

As with each year, the festival does a wonderful job of displaying the eclectic mix of jazz music that makes it such a special and unique genre of music. This year’s headliners include Todd Rundgren, Rebirth Brass Band, and Asleep at the Wheel as well as co-headliners Ramsey Lewis, The Mavericks, and Marc Broussard.

The festival also does a great job of showcasing local talent and this year is partnering with the Carrie Lazarus Fund for ExtraOrdinary Talent to showcase young talent in Central New York. Both days this year will be opened by two former ExtraOrdinary alums, Canen and Nick DiMaria.

Some may have noticed that the festival is a bit early this year, and Malfitano says this is because of the headliners availability.  The priority is to get the big names and book them, the rest is flexible.

Malfitano is excited for the festival to be on the Onondaga Community College campus again this year despite talks of a potential change in venue.  He says when people come to festivals, they want to socialize and not be sitting down the whole time. OCC is the perfect place to facilitate the type of atmosphere needed for the festival and he saw no reason to move.

The 35th annual M&T Syracuse Jazz Fest will take place on Friday, June 8th and Saturday, June 10th on the Onondaga Community College campus. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information and a full list of performers visit http://syracusejazzfest.com/
