Raising Funds for David's Refuge

Helping Provide Care for Caregivers

As a parent or guardian to a child with special needs, taking care of them can be stressful. One organization offers caretakers a place to relax and recharge. David’s Refuge offers a personally designed retreat at Bed and Breakfast’s for the caretakers.

Volunteer Manager Morgan Pipes says David’s Refuge was started by Warren and Brenda Pfohl in 2012 after they lost their son, David, to a 13 year battle with Batten Disease. The Pfohl's wanted to find the beauty in the brokenness that followed losing their son. The family noticed that there was a lack of care provided for caregivers who are working every day to take care of their kids.

David’s Refuge focuses on helping respite caregivers, by providing a two night stay at a local bed and breakfast. They provide a volunteer host that guides them through the weekend, so they can reconnect and recharge before going back to providing care.

Pipes says that the organization has grown from Manlius to the Southern Tier and into Western New York because of the volunteers. Last year, they were only able to serve 150 couples, but this year, they are able to help 250.

Realtor Chip Hodgkins says he was brought to David’s Refuge because he knew David and his family through church. He says that he likes giving to children's causes especially those that are dealing with medical or health matters. Hodgkins says David’s Refuge does a really good job caring for the caregivers so they can, in turn, care for their kids.

Last year, Hodgkins along with the rest of his realtor team, were able to help 50 families get a weekend away by raising $12,000. They raised the funds by giving an amount equal to 17.5 percent of their commission from any house sold or bought.

This year, the company’s goal is to raise $13,000 goals so they can help more families. For any houses sold or bought in the month of April through his firm, an amount equal to 12 percent of their commission will go towards David’s Refuge.
