Keeping Healthy During The Winter Holidays

Below are some of the tips that Five Star Urgent Care shared with us, on how to keep healthy during the winter holidays:

Good Hand Hygiene
1. Wash your hands properly and frequently with soap and water. Wet your hands with water. Lather with soap. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Rinse with water. Dry your hands with a clean towel or allow to air dry.
2. Hand sanitizers are a second alternative. They do not do as well at removing all microbes. Choose a hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol.
3. Good hand hygiene can dry your hands. Use a moisturizer to prevent cracking.

1. The holidays add to that “to do” list. Keep a regular wake up and bedtime.
2. Make sure you keep your bedroom a comfortable temperature and that it is quiet and dark.
3. Use your bedroom for sleep. Keep work, TV watching, etc. out of the bedroom.
4. Avoid large meals and alcohol before bed.
5. People are different, but adults generally need 7-8 hours a night.

Manage Stress
1. Stay active and use exercise.
2. Take time to care for yourself.
3. Stay socially connected.
4. Find support

Food Preparation
1. Keep your work station clean. Clean utensils with warm, soapy water. Use bleach solution to clean surfaces and cutting boards. Avoid cross-contamination. Have cutting boards reserved for raw meat.
2. Cook foods to appropriate temperatures. Use a food thermometer and measure internal temperatures.

Serving Food
1. Keep cold foods cold: at below 40 degrees C.
2. Keep warm foods warm: at 140 degrees C or warmer.
3. Discard perishables that have been out for 2 hours at room temperature.

Food Choice
1. Holidays are times that people abandon good eating habits. Use moderation.
2. If you have special dietary needs from a medical condition, continue to follow those diets.
3. Avoid fatty foods.
4. Stay well-hydrated.
5. Eat high-fiber foods.
6. Make smart choices around alcohol, and avoid using it as a means to manage stress.
7. Make safe transportation plans in advance of drinking.
8. Binge drinking is a risk for atrial fibrillation — “holiday heart syndrome.”
