Nonna's Easter Bread

Sistina shares her grandmother's homemade Italian Easter Bread.

2 STICKS of BUTTER
4 EGGS
1/2 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of warm milk
1 orange grated
1 cup of white raisins
Flour as much as needed.
1 package of rapid dry yeast

4-6 raw eggs to braid into the bread (dyed or plain)

Melt the butter with the milk in a saucepan or in the microwave. Allow it to get warm, not too hot.
In a larger bowl mix the sugar, yeast, raisins, orange peel and 1 cup of flour.
Add the warm milk, butter and eggs to the dry mixture.
Gradually add in flour and continue to mix.
Add flour until the dough in no longer sticky and comes away from the bowl.

Knead it until smooth then cover it with plastic wrap and let it rise until it doubles in size -- about 1-2 hours.
Remove plastic and shape the dough into ropes -- braid.   Nestle the whole eggs in their shells in the braids.

Bake at 350 F for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and lightly brush bread with well beaten egg and 1 tbsp of water. Bake for remaining 5 minutes.
