Today marks the start of the annual Polish Festival in Downtown Syracuse. Beginning at 4:00pm, there's a weekend full of fun highlighting the Polish culture. Iwona Popiel and Nancy Cummings join us today to tell us about the festival and give us a taste of some delicious homemade Polish food that will be featured at the festival.
Besides the food, there will be live music, a scholarship award ceremony, the Pole of the year will be announced, and to close the festival The Chardon Polka Band will play it out. A few special events you can expect to see this year include the new pierogi eating contes taking place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Also on Sunday, Miss Polonia will be crowned at 3:00 p.m. The constants are Carolina Creighton, Alexia Marczynski, Sophie Popiel and Amy Zurawski.
The festival goes from Friday, June 23rd until Sunday, June 25th. This festival helps raise money for the Polish Scholarship Fund, which awards $1,000 to ten high school and college students of Polish descent, fitting into theme of keeping the community vibrant and involved.
