Reality Check Youth Conference

Student Advocacy Group Fights Tobacco Advertising

Nearly 150 students from across New York are gathering at Cazenovia College this week, determined to fight the tobacco industry’s marketing influence on communities across the country. The Annual Reality Check Youth Summit is a multi-day conference for the most dedicated student advocates from the anti-tobacco group.

Reality Check is the youth action component of the New York State Bureau of Tobacco Control Program, and has been in existence since 2001. For the last 12 years, youth have worked to educate their peers on the tobacco industry's manipulative marketing practices and how they target young people.

Brennan Hysell, a junior at Madison Central School and recent Cortland High School graduate Katie Couture both have firsthand knowledge on the importance of prevention and living tobacco-free.

The Annual Reality Check Youth Summit allows students, the opportunities to work on leadership skills and public speaking. Students attending are inspired by National Youth Speakers to achieve their tobacco-free generation goals.

Reality Check is also working with national leaders and other states eliminate smoking from all youth-related films.
