Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- NewsChannel 9 and the American Red Cross teamed up with Central New Yorkers Thursday to raise funds for disaster relief following Hurricane Sandy and the damage left in its wake.

We’re happy to report that your generosity helped us raise a total of $47, 700 and counting – our online donations have yet to be tallied.

You can still make a donation online – at any time -- through the American Red Cross.

You may also make a $10 donation by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999.

Remember, your donation to the Red Cross is safe and secure, but you’ll need to be careful as scammers are already coming up with ways to cash in on the devastation left behind by Hurricane Sandy. Beware of fraudulent and bogus organizations trying to get you to donate.

The bottom line: Only give your money to charities and businesses that you know and trust and be skeptical if you’re ever approached by someone soliciting a donation that you don’t know.

You may also want to donate blood or take a class to volunteer your time to the relief efforts.
