Bike drive underway in Syracuse; help needed

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A bike drive that has grown to be a holiday tradition is underway in Syracuse.

Organizer Jan Maloff is currently collecting old bikes in hopes of giving away thousands.

The giveaway itself won’t be held until December. But Maloff says he’s already running into challenges in funding the event. In addition, he’s in need of bicycle parts and volunteers for the operation.

"We have a few new challenges this year. The State Fair is asking for event insurance and I don't blame them at all, today people want to sue for anything, so they want to be protected,” Maloff said.

That insurance will cost $1,200.

Maloff needs to use a building at the State Fairgrounds to hold the thousands of bikes he will collect from the public starting Nov. 26.

He also wants to start giving locks away after some kids’ bikes were stolen over the past few months.

This year, he also wants to get a caravan of trucks to help families get the bikes to their homes after the giveaway.

The most significant need is for better tools and equipment.

"Our equipment is wearing down and we do need to raise funds for a trailer...it will be about $2,900,” Maloff said.

Anyone who would like to help should call (315) 446-7570 or mail their donation to CNY Family Bike at 319 Barrington Rd., Syracuse.
