Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A taste of southern hospitality was in Syracuse on Tuesday. Bobby Deen, the host of the Cooking Channel’s “Not my Mama’s Meals” wants us to know that healthy cooking can be delicious. His mom, celebrity chef Paula Deen was diagnosed with diabetes last year, and Bobby, who has revamped his diet, too, is sharing his secrets.

“You learn to enjoy salt and sugar and overseasoned food, you can just as easily adjust to eating lighter. It’s very simple. We’re certainly not telling people to deprive themselves, it’s all about balance and moderation,” Deen said.

Check out Deen’s hearty barley and mushroom soup recipe.

Bobby Deen will be giving another cooking demo Tuesday night at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel. It begins at 6 p.m. and runs through 8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
