Central New York (WSYR-TV/WROC-TV) -- Lawmakers are encouraging New Yorkers to dispose of unused or expired medications properly this weekend during the annual “Prescription Drug Take Back day.”

Nation Prescription Drug Take Back Day is this Saturday April 27, from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The event provides an opportunity for people to safely dispose of unwanted or unused prescription drugs at local community drop-off sites.

National Drug Take Back Day is sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Not only does proper disposal of drugs fight prescription drug abuse, it's also good for the environment.

There are also a number of drop boxes located at New York State Police Troop Headquarters. The boxes are available year around, are secure, open to the public and allow New Yorkers across the state to anonymously dispose of unused prescription medications and controlled substances. Drop box locations can be found HERE.
