Look Now: Facing Breast Cancer

Local Project Looking to Break Breast Cancer Barriers

Tula Goenka is a filmmaker, author, human rights activist and professor. She is also a survivor of breast cancer and has launched a multimedia project called “Look Now” to empower and educate women on what it means to go through a diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Goenka says, the options for those who are faced with the challenges of what to expect, are slim.  While there is plenty of support in terms of getting mammograms and awareness to help prevent  the disease, there is not enough awareness for what you go through in the process, and afterwards, she added.

"Look Now" will use a series of clothed and nude portraits with an accompanying documentary. Goenka was the first person photographed and wants the project to be interactive.

Goenka is still looking for women in Onondaga county to participate in the exhibition. There is a very short questionnaire as part of the process. The photography aspect of the project begins in January. The participants need to be willing to show their breasts on camera, and be above eighteen years of age.
