OCRRA Battery Collection

Do you have a drawer full of dead batteries? Here is how you can expose of them correctly.
Do you ever wonder what is the correct way to dispose of your batteries?

The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency has made it their mission to inform the community on how to dispose of their alkaline batteries appropriately. Today on the show we had Ann Fordock, an OCRRA Recycling Specialist, explain to us the importance of recycling batteries.

Fordock stated that used batteries are a good source of heavy metals, zinc, potassium, and manganese. If alkaline batteries are recycled than these products could be reused in other ways. The OCRRA is currently holding their July Curbside Battery Collection to make it as easy as possible for people to dispose of their batteries.

July Curbside Battery Collection Instructions:
  • Collect old alkaline batteries in a special yellow bag (email OCRRA at info@ocrra.org with your name and mailing address for a free bag.)
  • Place the yellow bag on top of your closed garbage can during the month of July.
  • Haulers will bring them to OCRRA to be disposed correctly.

This collection has been successful for the past 15 years, collecting more than 100,000 lbs of alkaline batteries each year thanks to the community.
