Cancer rates drop among African-American men

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A study by the American Cancer Society found that the death rate of cancer in African-American men is on the decline.

Cancer rates among African-American men has dropped 2.4 percent annually since 1999. That’s compared with a 1.7 percent drop among white men in the same time frame.

Doctors say the decline is greater for black men because they started with higher rates of deaths and greater rates of preventable deaths.

Physicians credit cancer prevention education and decreased disparities in care for the drop.
