Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- There is some concern about a mosquito-transmitted virus that causes dengue fever.

Biomedical researchers from across the country gathered at Upstate Medical University on Friday to discuss the growing threat.

Dengue fever is the leading cause of illness and death in the tropics and subtropics. Its presence is starting to be seen here in the U.S., in states including Florida, Texas and Hawaii.

"They say you're only one airplane flight away from an epidemic, so with 40 percent of the world population in a dengue endemic area, it could easily be introduced into parts of the United States,” explained Dr. Mark Polehmus, Center for Global Health.

Dengue fever is also known as “break bone fever.” It causes severe headaches, pain behind the eyes and joint pain.
