Research suggests link between bacteria and weight gain

Like many people, scientists have been curious as to why some people seem to be capable of eating anything without ever gaining weight, while others gain weight merely looking at a rich dessert.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Like many people, scientists have been curious as to why some people seem to be capable of eating anything without ever gaining weight, while others gain weight merely looking at a rich dessert.

New research indicates that the phenomenon could have something to do with bacteria.

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have identified 26 different types of bacteria in the human digestive system that appear to be linked to obesity.

The study’s authors say more research is needed to see if the “chicken and egg” theory applies; that is, whether the bacteria is caused by being overweight or if the weight gain is caused by bacteria.
