Sedentary women have greater heart attack risk

There’s even more evidence that being a couch potato isn’t good for you, especially if you belong to a certain class of women.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology asked post-menopausal women ages 50 to 79 how many hours a day they spend sitting.

About 71,000 of them answered over a 12 year period.

Scientists found that women who sat for ten hours or more were likelier to have a heart attack or a stroke, especially if they were overweight and over age 70.

Compared to more active women who sat for five hours a day or less, the sedentary women had a 63 percent greater risk of developing heart disease, independent of leisure time physical activity.

The authors suggest taking breaks from prolonged sitting – even just by standing up or taking short walks.
