Study: Heavy coffee consumption may increase risk of death

Americans consume more than 400 million cups of coffee a day.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV/ABC) – Americans consume more than 400 million cups of coffee a day.

A new study published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings indicates a surprising link between heavy coffee consumption and an increased risk of death.

Researchers studied the health habits of more than 43,000 adults for roughly 17 years.

Among men, those who drank more than four cups of coffee a day, whether it was regular or decaf, had a 20 percent higher risk of death from any cause.

For men and women younger than 55, the risk was even higher.

Coffee may not be the true issue though.

Coffee drinkers tend be more stressed, get less sleep and are also more likely to smoke and skip exercise.

All of these factors may play a role but if you drink more than four cups of coffee a day, it might not be a bad idea to cut back.
