Study finds chickenpox vaccine highly effective

A long-term study of the chickenpox vaccine has found it highly effective after one dose and even more effective after two.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A long-term study of the chickenpox vaccine has found it highly effective after one dose and even more effective after two.

Before 1995, when the vaccine came into widespread use, chickenpox affected nearly 90 percent of the population. Thousands were hospitalized and about 100 deaths were reported per year.

Researchers followed thousands of patients who got the vaccine, starting in 1995. There was a significant drop in cases of the chickenpox in the wake of the vaccine and even more so in children who had a second dose of the vaccine.

There were also fewer cases of shingles, which is very rare in children.
