Study promotes tobacco-fighting framework

Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death in the world, meanwhile an estimated six million deaths are attributed to smoking each year.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death in the world, yet an estimated six million deaths are attributed to smoking each year.

Now, a study by the World Health Organization predicts that 7.4 million premature deaths worldwide will be prevented by a tobacco-control framework devised by the WHO called MPOWER.

MPOWER is an acronym referring to:

- Monitoring tobacco use and prevention policies
- Protecting people from tobacco smoke
- Offering help to quit tobacco use
- Warning people about the effects of tobacco use
- Enforcing bans on tobacco advertising and promotion
- And raising taxes on tobacco

41 countries are making a priority of at least some of the measures.

The study’s authors say other benefits will be fewer childbirth problems and less loss of workplace productivity.
