DeWitt (WSYR-TV) - DeWitt Police say they have charged a fourth suspect in connection to a crime ring that targeted retail chains.

Oswego Police picked up 37-year-old Cynthia Smith in the Port City after the authorities received multiple tips regarding her whereabouts.

DeWitt Police say Oswego Police recognized Smith. They used 9WSYR.com's OnTheLookout page to identify her.

Smith was wanted on charges of scheme to defraud in the first degree and falsifying business records in the first degree.

According to police, Smith and her cohorts stole merchandise from stores and then returned the items to multiple locations of the same retailer in return for gift cards.

The suspects would then sell the gift cards to area pawn shops police said.

At the time of the arrests, police say the suspects were responsible for more than $10,000 in fraudulent returns of stolen merchandise spanning several months.

The suspects routinely falsified their identifications in attempts to bypass the retail merchandise return sales systems, according to police.

Three others have already been arrested in connection to the alleged crime ring.
