Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse Police are hoping you can help them identify the suspects ‘Caught On Tape’ during a cigarette heist in Syracuse. They believe similar thefts that have been happening in the suburbs may possibly involve the same suspects.

Police say the bandits that struck the Rite Aid located at 401 West Seneca Turnpike in Syracuse are very slick.

“They are clearly looking to distract the clerk and as soon as the clerk turns her back and starts walking away, they open up a bag, and come behind the counter and steal about $1,400 worth of cigarettes,” said Sergeant Tom Connellan with the Syracuse Police Department.

The thieves targeted Newport brand cigarettes and similar thefts have been reported in DeWitt and Baldwinsville.

“They are similar in the fact that they are distracting the clerk, coming from behind the counter, stealing large amounts of cigarettes of the same kind, Newport cigarettes and then fleeing,” Sgt. Connellan said.

Police believe the men could be selling or trading the cigarettes and that it can be a quick and easy way to make money.

If you have any information that can help police identify the suspects, you are urged to call (315) 442-52222.
