Police seeking suspect in brutal downtown stabbing

Syracuse Police need your help finding the people responsible for the brutal stabbing of 27-year-old Larry McCraney in downtown Syracuse last Friday.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Syracuse Police need your help finding the people responsible for the brutal stabbing of 27-year-old Larry McCraney in downtown Syracuse last Friday.

The incident has put some Central New Yorkers on edge.

The streets of downtown Syracuse are usually bustling with activity, but with more and more people coming into the area, scenes like the one on Friday are becoming a little too common.

“Last Friday afternoon at about one in the afternoon we had a victim that got attacked at the corner of Fayette and Salina Street. Unfortunately, that victim is still in extremely critical condition and his prognosis is not really good right now,” said Syracuse Police spokesman, Tom Connellan.

The stabbing has Allison Johnston thinking twice about coming downtown.

“Usually, you think nighttime is when you have to worry about stuff, but when you can get stabbed in the middle of the day, I don’t know what you do,” Johnston said.

Johnston now finds other places to go, but if she has to come downtown, she says she always makes sure someone else is with her.

“I’ve been here alone and I got shouted at and had sexist remarks yelled to me across streets, so I don’t come alone anymore,” Johnston continued.

Mike Watson is downtown everyday of the week and even with the increased violence his perception of downtown hasn’t changed.

“I feel like most things are targeted and I never got bothered down here unless it’s by the panhandlers or whatever else,” Watson said.

Police still don’t know if last Friday’s stabbing was targeted, but they do know they need the public’s help finding the suspects.

Police believe that there were witnesses to the stabbing and that someone may have gotten cell phone video of it. If you know anything that can help police in this case, call 442-5222.
