Rome Police identify victim in Stevens Street homicide

Rome Police have identified a man who was shot dead on Thursday, March 28.
Rome (WSYR-TV) – Rome Police have identified a man who was shot dead on Thursday, March 28.

Police found 32-year-old Jason Oates lying dead on Stevens Street after responding to a report indicating that shots had been fired around 10:51 p.m.

Oates, who police say was often call “Clutch” or “Klutch,” was from Madison, Ala.

He had been living on the 300 block of Williams Street in Rome, but he frequently traveled to his home state.

Police say the suspect is a male who was last seen running from the scene toward North Madison Street in a dark colored hooded jacket.

Rome Police are asking anyone who might have information on the incident to call (315) 339-7715 or email anonymous tips through romped.com or through the department’s Facebook page.

Two homicides occurred last week in the small Oneida County city. Police do not believe the killings are connected.

Police are investigating leads in both cases.
