Hacked Google account scam: The Real Deal

If you’ve received a text message from a sender claiming your Google account has been hacked, you may have been targeted by scammers.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – If you’ve received a text message from a sender claiming your Google account has been hacked, you may have been targeted by scammers.

A NewsChannel 9 viewer called saying her husband had received such a text that instructed him to call a phone number with an area code located in Illinois.

According to Google representatives, the company will reach out to its users via text if that user has a verified phone number associated with a Google account.

The company encourages users to register a phone number so that Google can send a message to quickly notify a user when there is suspicious activity on his or her account.

That said, Google never asks for verification from the message itself. In the caller’s case, the return call was to a bogus phone number.
