Home heating oil prices: The Real Deal

Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - It's the middle of summer but if you use home heating oil, you’re probably already worrying about how you're going to afford to stay warm this winter.  The energy department estimates you'll have to come up with $700 more than you paid last year to heat your home.

Here’s The Real Deal on whether you should consider a fill-up now, and how much it will cost you.

We've found that the average price per gallon for heating oil right now is within just a few cents of where it was about a month ago. Most places we called are around $4.50 a gallon.  But it's important to shop around because the prices do range.

The cheapest we found was the Babcock Oil company; their cash price right now is $4.35 gallon. Malone's fuel service is just a few cents higher at $4.37 a gallon.

At the other end of the spectrum, Suburban Propane is at $4.70 a gallon, and Nelson Petroleum is selling heating oil at $4.75 a gallon.

A few companies are offering to lock in customers at a specific rate, which means you may end up paying a little bit higher of a price now, but if the rate goes up over the winter, you won't have to pay more than the lock-in price.

It's best to ask your supplier what plans are available. If you need to get on a budget plan, it may be a good idea to call now and set that up.
