7-year-old Liverpool girl starts project to collect Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uniforms for children around the world

Liverpool (WSYR-TV) - A local girl is taking her love of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to an international level.

7-year-old Valencia Bidwell of Liverpool wants children all over the world to be able to practice the martial art.

Valencia has been practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for nearly 2 years now and says she enjoys the life lessons she learns from practicing.

“I like that it teaches me to be a problem solver, because there’s different obstacles I have to get around,” she said.

Valencia’s father, Mike Bidwell, teaches the art.

“Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art form that mainly focuses on fighting and grappling,” he explained.

Because of the emphasis on grappling, students must have special uniform - known as a ‘Gi’ - so they will be able to perform specific grappling techniques.

Valencia started ‘The Gi Project’ to help collect Gi tops and bottoms, belts and any other used sparring or training gear for children around the world.
