Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Some of you have noticed construction along Salisbury Road in Syracuse near the Westcott Reservoir and you want to know what’s being built.

It’s an ultraviolet light disinfection facility for the city of Syracuse Water Department. Under Federal rules, the city must use two forms of disinfection for their water supply.

The department’s chief engineer Eric Murdock says Syracuse has always chlorinated the water it gets from Skaneateles Lake and soon UV light will complete the process.

The light sterilizes whatever micro-organisms are in the water and keeps those populations within acceptable levels. The facility is mostly constructed and the UV reactor is in place. Now, it’s a matter of electrical and piping work.

Construction is slated to be complete by the spring of next year.
