Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Question: A viewers call the Your Stories Team with concerns about the conditions of their rental property. They say the landlord won't respond to requests for repairs and wants to know what they can do about it.

Answer: Sharon Sherman with the greater Syracuse Tenants Network says city renters can call the Syracuse Code Enforcement Department and file a complaint.

In most cases, Sherman says a landlord will make the repair as soon as a code enforcement officer is called to the property.

In other cases, she says it will take a little prodding.

If that doesn't work, you can involve the legal system, but it can be a time consuming process, especially if the landlord lives out-of-state.

Sherman encourages people to call the Syracuse Tenants Network for guidance about other measures that can be taken, given a particular set of circumstances.
