Why do clerks scan your ID when buying a lottery ticket: Your Stories

Question: Are clerks required to scan your driver’s license when you buy a lottery ticket?
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Question: Are clerks required to scan your driver’s license when you buy a lottery ticket?

Answer: The State Gaming Office says stores are not required to scan licenses, although they are required to make sure they aren't selling tickets to minors.

While not all retailers scan licenses, the State Gaming Office says many of them do in order to take a proactive approach to make sure licenses are real and to avoid underage sales.

Nice-N-Easy says they started making it mandatory for employees to scan licenses for sales including lottery, alcohol and tobacco as of last week.

They say when a license is scanned, no information is stored and it's not used for any other purpose except to validate a person's age.
