Why is the water on Oneida Lake green: Your Stories

Question: A resident that lives on Oneida Lake near Lakeport wants to know why the water has had a green color to it.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Question: A resident that lives on Oneida Lake near Lakeport wants to know why the water has had a green color to it?

Answer: Thanks to our friends at SUNY ESF who accepted a sample of the water from the resident to test it.

An initial analysis showed that the color of the water is caused by a blue-green algae bloom.

This particular bloom contains bacteria known to produce toxins.

Further testing showed just how much of the bacteria is present in the water.

But the general recommendation is to avoid excessive contact with it.

You can't treat for the algae. You can only wait until the weather gets colder and it goes away naturally.
