Week 1: High school basketball playoffs preview

It’s the first night of High School basketball playoffs and NewsChannel 9 has all the games covered for you.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- It’s the first night of High School basketball playoffs and NewsChannel 9 has all the games covered for you.

And, because it’s the first night of the playoffs, that means some of the better teams in Section III won’t be in action and that gives them an advantage. They get some time to enjoy a bye-week, rest up and more importantly, they can scout their first opponent, which means we should have some closely contested games.

As the lower seeds look to move on, there’s a good 8-9 matchup on tap at Bishop Grimes. The Cobras play host to Phoenix – both have 11 and 7 records. In fact, they split the two previous meetings.

The Firebirds beat Grimes 60-58 back in December. Then the Cobras returned the favor winning 71-56 a couple of weeks back.

CBA and Oswego is another intriguing 8-9 matchup. The Brothers compete against Class A teams most of the season, but then pair up with the Class AA schools for the post-season.

CBA is 0-3 against the big schools from Section III this year, losing to Henninger, C-NS and F-M.

The winner of this one will play top seeded Fayetteville-Manlius in the quarterfinals.

Other games in tonight’s lineup include: Mexico at Jamesville-DeWitt, Cazenovia at Syracuse Academy of Science, and a double-header at Weedsport.

We’ll have highlights from more than a dozen playoff games tonight on Friday Night Fever, beginning just after 11 p.m. on NewsChannel 9.
