[Warning: This story contains major spoilers from Sunday's Once Upon a Time season finale. Read at your own risk!]
With Storybrooke on the brink of destruction, Once Upon a Time's Season 2 finale sent a good chunk of our favorite characters away from their homes — but not for the reason we all thought.
In Storybrooke, the Charmings try to enlist Gold's help to stop Greg (Ethan Embry) and Tamara (Sonequa Martin-Green), but when he learns that Neal (Michael Raymond-James) likely died, Gold is ready to die himself to pay for his sins — which includes fraying the rope Henry (Jared Gilmore) was swinging on to kill him.
However, Greg and Tamara have already activated the trigger. Fortunately, Hook decides to switch sides and help the Charmings steal the beans so they can get everyone out of Storybrooke. Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) and Charming (Josh Dallas) are able to track down at least one of the beans, but Regina (Lana Parrilla) won't be going with them because she's planning to sacrifice herself to contain the trigger.
Meanwhile, the flashbacks pick up where the penultimate episode left off, with Bae in the custody of Hook, who decides against turning Bae over to "him" when the Lost Boys show up. Instead, Hook wants to befriend Bae once he discovers that he's the son of Rumplestiltskin. But after Bae uncovers that Hook was involved with his mother Milah (Rachel Shelley), and that he was planning to use him to kill Rumple, Hook turns him over to the Lost Boys.
As the trigger ravages Storybrooke, Gold gives Belle (Emilie de Ravin) the potion the Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy) had finally created to restore her memory. But there's a chance they won't all die when Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) suggests they should send the trigger through the portal so they don't sacrifice Regina in the process. But Hook has stolen the bean and sailed away from Storybrooke. As Emma finally calls her parents Mom and Dad, she realizes that she might be able to help Regina stop the trigger.
As the two are able to combine magical forces to stop the trigger, the original forest recedes, but Henry has been taken by Greg and Tamara. Unfortunately, Greg and Tamara's plans to get rid of magic is incomparable to what they've discovered inside Storybrooke: Henry. Using one of the last beans, they jump through the portal to Neverland.
Fortunately, Hook returns to Storybrooke and even offers up his ship and the final bean to track down Henry. But Gold must leave Belle behind so she can cloak the town of Storybrooke from other people from the home office, meaning even they will be unable to find it once they leave. As they go through the portal — and we simultaneously see Mulan (Jamie Chung), Aurora (Sarah Bolger) and Phillip (Julian Morris) find a barely breathing Neal — we discover that it was not Bae whom "he" was after, but Henry, as evidenced by a drawing of Henry likely done more than 200 years ago. And that "he"? It's Peter Pan. Dun. Dun. Dunnnn.
