Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- If you do strenuous exercise, you may be among the many who down a couple of Motrin or Advil before you workout to prevent muscle soreness. Did you know those painkillers don’t offer any benefit and can cause stomach problems.

Studies have shown strenuous exercise alone leads to small amounts of intestinal trauma.

A study out Wednesday shows taking ibuprofen on a regular basis to help you work out longer and harder can cause leakage in your intestines and small amounts of bacteria can get into your bloodstream.

Animal studies have also shown that ibuprofen hampers the ability of muscles to rebuild themselves after exercise.

There is no scientifically valid reason to use ibuprofen before exercise and even more reasons to avoid it.
