(CNN/WSYR-TV) – A six-year-old boy has died after being accidentally shot by a four-year-old neighbor.

Police in Toms River, New Jersey, are investigating how the younger child got the .22-caliber rifle from his family’s home.

“The bullet went into his head,” the six-year-old victim’s uncle Danny Watkins said.

The call to police came in at about 7 p.m. Monday, initially as a BB gun accident.

Neighbors were shocked to hear it was far worse.

"You would think that the parents would have the guns at least locked up or something like that. I mean, I'm not against gun laws or anything like that, but at least be responsible. If you're going to have the guns, be responsible," said one neighbor.

Debbie Cotto, another neighbor saw the little boy being taken away on a stretcher. She and other neighbors say authorities removed at least 10 other guns from the child’s house.

"I just don't understand why someone would have a loaded gun in the house. I think they have three children," Cotto said.

Ocean County prosecutor Joseph Coronato didn’t comment on any other weapons removed from the home and say it’s too soon to say whether any charges will be filed.

"There's been no decisions made one way or the other how we're going to proceed, other than the fact that we are collecting all of the facts. And, once we get all of the facts, we'll make a determination," Coronato said.
