9 transported to hospital after DOT dump truck and van crash in Madison County

Smithfield (WSYR-TV) – Emergency crews – including nine ambulances and two helicopters – responded to the scene of an accident in the town of Smithfield on Wednesday morning.

Nine people were taken to hospitals in Central New York - including one person who was transported with a critical injury.

According to State Police, the accident involved a Department of Transportation dump truck and a van carrying teachers from the Sherburne-Earlville School District who were on their way to a conference in Cicero.

The accident occurred near Gill Road and Swamp Road.

State Police believe the van went through a stop sign. The DOT truck driver tried to swerve, but struck the van, sending both off the road.

The teachers who were taken to the hospital included:
  • Driver - Austin R. Mullen, age 43, Medivac by Mercy Flight to Upstate Medical.
  • Passenger: Jennifer Howard, age 40, transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with leg injuries.
  • Passenger: Keeley A. Fenton, age 35, transported to Upstate Medical with head injuries.
  • Passenger: Clifford E. Thomas, age 50, transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with back injuries.
  • Passenger: Kathleen L. O'Connor, age 52, transported to Upstate Medical with facial injuries.
  • Passenger: Sue Ellen Westbrook, age 52, transported to Upstate Medical with head injuries.

The dump truck occupants were:
  • Driver: Timothy A. Smith, age 47, transported to Community Memorial Hospital in Madison with minor injuries.
  • Passenger: Brenda L. Spaulding, age 51, transported to Crouse-Irving Hospital with minor injuries.
  • Passenger: Daniel E. Stetson, age 54, transported to Community Memorial Hospital in Madison with minor injuries.
