Auburn (WSYR-TV) – An Auburn apartment manager has been accused of stealing more than $30,000 from his bosses.

According to Auburn Police, Michael Howell, 52, of Thornton Avenue, rented out properties without telling the owners and pocketed the rent money.

The owners of Gen West apartments discovered Howell’s alleged swindle when they visited an apartment they believed to be vacant, but discovered that it was occupied.

The tenant told them he paid Howell directly in cash.

Howell allegedly conducted the scam with 30 tenants. Police don’t believe the tenants were aware of the alleged criminal activity.

He was charged with grand larceny and falsifying business records.
