Auburn man who stabbed his girlfriend to death sentenced

An Auburn man who broke into his estranged girlfriend’s home and stabbed her to death while their child slept will spend at least five decades in prison.
Auburn (WSYR-TV) – An Auburn man who broke into his estranged girlfriend’s home and stabbed her to death while their child slept will spend at least five decades in prison.

On Oct. 4, Ryan Brahney was convicted on seven counts, including two counts of murder in the second degree for killing 29-year-old Bridget Bell.

He was also convicted on two counts of burglary in the first degree, one count of criminal possession of a weapon, and two counts of criminal contempt.

He was sentenced to 54 years to life in prison on Thursday.

The 39-year-old man refused to attend his own sentencing.

In November 2011, police found Bell at her residence at 115 Olympia Terrace in Auburn with numerous stab wounds. Her 3-year-old child was sleeping and unharmed in a separate room.

Shortly afterward, they found Brahney at a residence on VanAnden Street in Auburn and arrested him.

Brahney had numerous encounters with the law and spent many years in prison, including a 15-year stint for assault with intent to seriously harm with a weapon.

In January 2010, he was convicted of assault in third degree; his victim was Bell.

He had only been out of prison for nine months before the night of the murder.
