Community rallies for three Oneida County sisters

VERNON, NY (WSYR-TV) - A community in Oneida County raised more than $20,000 on Sunday to help three sisters who lost both of their parents unexpectedly over the past two years.

On Sunday, a fundraiser was held to help 16-year-old Amanda Snizek, 22-year-old Melissa Snizek and 24-year-old Kelly Snizek continue to live in the home they grew up in.

After the death of their parents, the sisters were left with a mortgage, bills and college tuition.

“Their mom worked two jobs to get the girls through school, the older two girls. “We're just here to help out, make life a little easier for them,” said family friend Patrick Hubbard, who helped organize the fundraiser.

The girls’ father died unexpectedly two years ago. Their mother Judy Shizek died in October from septic shock after chemotherapy for her breast cancer.

“When she was diagnosed, that was probably the biggest concern that she had, was making sure that the girls were looked after and she knew she didn't have to beg us. She knew we'd be there for them,” said Judy’s younger sister Lori Sitts.

“I know our parents. That's what they would have wanted if they were still here. They wouldn't have wanted us to change, but to go to school, graduate, stay in the house,” said Kelly Snizek.

“It feels good to know that we're making them proud. So we're not just giving up or anything, we're going to keep working really hard. We're going to be good students, and be really successful hopefully,” said Melissa Snizek.

Kelly and Melissa moved home in part to save on rent. They now find themselves the heads of the house, in charge of two pets and their younger sister Amanda who will graduate from Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School this year.

“I think it's hard for them sometimes to be more of a disciplinary role rather than a sisterly role. So, I think they're learning,” said Amanda Snizek.
