Crime scientists getting national recognition

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - The Center for Forensic Sciences largely goes overlooked.

But recently, the center, which is a key piece of Central New York crime solving efforts, is receiving a little more positive attention.

The Center’s crime lab was examined on more than 450 standards.

"It’s an external independent body, so it tells both our submitters and the public that you can be confident in the work we do. When we go to court to testify that work is solid,” said Director of Laboratories Kathleen Corrado.

Moreover, the accreditation the lab earned for another five years means it continues to meet the highest industry standards in the world.

Corrado says the lab has seen standards get tougher since the last time. The technology has greatly improved since then, allowing the lab to see more than ever before.

"We think anything we can do to make our product better is important, so we take it very seriously and we're very pleased to say we are accredited,” Corrado said.

The Center has seen the three labs it houses all receive accreditation in the past six months.

"It’s something we take into account when we're making decisions – be it about equipment, personnel, or the overall planning of the office. It's something that's always in the back of our mind,” said Onondaga County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Robert Stoppacher.

The medical examiner’s office also just gained accreditation for the first time since the mid 90s – a top priority for Stoppacher when he took over a few years ago.

"Allows you to look at it almost more objectively and say 'Are we really doing the things we are supposed to be doing?' Thankfully, 90 percent of the things we were supposed to be doing we were doing and there were minor things we need to update or correct,” Stoppacher said.

The accreditations formalize what both say they’ve known – that excellent, top industry quality goes on inside the center.

In addition to the lab and medical examiner’s office, the Forensic Toxicology lab just received its accreditation.
