Experts say new apps increase chances of cyber bullying

As a new social website or app seems to pop up every day, so does a new way for children to cyber bully each other.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - As a new social website or app seems to pop up every day, so does a new way for children to cyber bully each other.

Cyber bullying is no longer limited to just email and instant messaging, it's expanded to apps such as Snapchat and Kik.

New technology and apps bring more photos, videos and sharing, but they also may bring more cyber bullying.

Some experts’ say all parents can really do to help is to keep up. That means parents should study up to know what apps and technology are out there.

“If they’re not in that space and making that effort, then they’re setting up their children for harm,” said Bill Ward, a social media expert and professor at Syracuse University.

The constantly-evolving world of technology may have its benefits, but experts say it can also make parenting more difficult.

“Supervision is still a really good intervention that parents have, but supervision takes on a whole new meaning now in the 21st century,” said Dr. Tanya Gesek, a child and adolescent psychologist.

“There’s a disconnect between the generations that parents are often in a constant stage of catching up. By the time they catch up, children are the next step ahead,” said Kate Brodock, president of Girl Tech, a global organization that helps girls grasp digital media.

If your child is a victim of cyber bullying, experts say the best way to deal with the situation is to handle it the same way you would in person.

“We have a saying in social media, don’t feed the trolls. So it’s never a good idea to respond to the negative comments or negative feedback directly,” Ward said.

Experts agree that in-person intervention is the best bet, if you feel safe doing so.

If not, you are urged to seek help from a teacher or police officer.
