Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Workers at fast-food franchises including McDonald’s, Burger King, and KFC are on strike in what organizers are saying will be the largest action of its kind in the industry’s history.

Strikes were planned in 50 cities across the US, including Boston, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Memphis, and New York, according to CNNMoney.

The workers are demanding a wage increase to $15 an hour and the right to form unions without reprisals.

Nationally, the average wage of a fast-food worker is $9 an hour, or $18,500 a year – which is $4,500 below the poverty income threshold as established by the Census Bureau for a family of four.

Organizers expect to be joined by retail workers from Macy’s, Sears, Walgreens, and Victoria’s Secret.
