Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A Syracuse family is celebrating the New Year by welcoming a new member of the family. The first New Year’s baby in Central New York was born at 12:32 Tuesday morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Mom Angelise and baby Arianna are both happy and healthy. Arianna weighed in at five pounds and measured 20 inches long.

“We thought she was going to be born on New Year’s Eve, but when we called to say she was born on New Year’s Day, everyone was excited,” said Mom Anjalese Brown.

Arianna was due at the end of the week, but instead came a little early and just in time for the New Year.

“[This is] the best gift we could get. Now we’re the best family in Syracuse because we have a New Year’s baby,” said Grandmother Montrell Dupree.

Area hospitals have a friendly competition going on about who has the first New Year’s baby. St. Joe’s won this year, with four others born after Arianna. One baby was delivered just 5 minutes later at 12:37 a.m. St. Joe's says more could be on the way later today. Crouse’s first baby was born just after 3 a.m.
