Hundreds compete in Syracuse Police DARE Karate Championships

More than 200 students from across Central New York competed in Syracuse Police Department's 8th Annual DARE Karate Championships.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- More than 200 kids from across Central New York competed in the Syracuse Police Department's 8th Annual DARE Karate Championships.

DARE which is short for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is a program that teaches kids about the dangers of drugs, guns and violence.

Organizers say the championship is an interactive way to raise awareness about their mission.

"With martial arts teaching you honor, empathy and respect, which are some of the core values you would have with DARE, you can mesh the two, because you already have kids that are learning that in various schools," said Ofc. Esteban Trotman, Syracuse Police Department.

All of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Syracuse DARE program.
