Investigation into fire at home in Fabius

Investigators are looking into the cause of a house fire on Swift Road in Fabius on Saturday.
FABIUS, NY (WSYR-TV) – Investigators are looking into the cause of a house fire on Swift Road in Fabius on Saturday.

It started around 5:45 p.m. in the garage and spread to the rest of the house.

Officials believe no one was living in the home as there was no furniture inside. It appeared the home was being remodeled.

When firefighters arrived on scene the garage had already burned to the ground.

“Doors were all locked. Nobody was home. So it probably had quite a head start of us before we were activated, probably wasn't until it breached the walls or breached the roof that neighbors called it in,” said Onondaga County Deputy Fire Coordinator Rob Wheatley.

Firefighters had some issues getting water to the fire because there are few hydrants in the area.

Extra companies from places like Truxton and Deruyter delivered water for the Fabius fire department.

“We're in a rural water supply here so we don't have hydrants. We went with 9 tankers, established a fill site in the village of Fabius and started a tanker shuttle,” said Wheatley.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was hurt.

Firefighters were able to salvage part of the home.
