Jim Boeheim weighs in on the future of I-81

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Syracuse University coach Jim Boeheim is rarely shy about weighing in on topics that have little to do with the basketball court.

So it was no surprise on Monday night that when a reporter asked for his thoughts on the future of I-81, the Hall of Fame coach replied with his opinion.

The stretch of highway is a major artery through the Salt City, but wear and age demand a solution to it.

Transportation experts and Central New Yorkers have spent the last few years discussing the topic – with solutions ranging from a new elevated highway, to a tunnel under the city, to a street-level boulevard.

Boeheim said the future of the highway should be determined by experts on the matter and not by residents of Central New York.

“My thoughts are that somebody who knows more about it than I do should figure that out,” Boeheim said. “When they start getting input from the community, that makes me wonder.”

Both city residents and residents of suburban Onondaga County have presented strong opinions on the highway's future as it passes through Downtown Syracuse.

Boeheim compared asking for community members’ input on the highway to asking members of the media who he should start in a game.

A reporter asked if Boeheim would like to comment on Obamacare. The coach refrained but noted that neither Medicare nor Medicaid were popular programs when they began.
