Life after winning the lottery: Fabius lottery winner shares his story

NewsChannel 9 caught up with Fabius’ Ed Bobbette who won the Mega Millions Lottery in August. He knows exactly what if feels like to be holding that winning ticket.
Fabius (WSYR-TV) -- The largest ever Powerball jackpot has hit $550-million, and with just hours left until tonight’s drawing, Powerball officials are saying there’s a 75 percent chance that there will be a winner.

The rush was on at Rocky’s News Stand in Syracuse Wednesday afternoon, as folks lined up to get their hands on a ticket.

Anytime there’s a bigger jackpot, the folks at Rocky’s say they see the biggest crowds just hours before the drawing.

NewsChannel 9 caught up with Fabius’ Ed Bobbette who won the Mega Millions Lottery in August. He knows exactly what if feels like to be holding that winning ticket.

Bobbette said he’d continue working, even though he won the jackpot and he stayed true to his word. At 53-years-old, Bobbette has remained at his job at the Fabius Highway Department.

“I’ve got one more year to get my 20 years in, then retire. That’s my goal,” he said.

Not much has changed for the Fabius native, who says he enjoys his job, after all it’s the very place he discovered he was holding the winning ticket. It was in August that he was reading the newspaper at the highway garage when he noticed the same numbers he had faithfully played for 10 years turned out to be the winning combination.

Since then Bobbette says he hasn’t splurged or taken any extravagant trips.

“I bought a new car for the wife. I bought an excavator and I paid off the house,” Bobbette said.

He’s still living in the same home and driving his ’77 Ford, Bobbette says he’s just enjoying the simple life and looking forward to a worry-free retirement and maybe even a trip.

“I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii,” Bobbette said.

Bobbette says he still plays Mega Millions every week and he still plays the exact same numbers that won him the million in August. He’s also hoping to get lucky again with one of the ten Powerball tickets he bought earlier in the week.

Watch tonight’s Powerball drawing on NewsChannel 9’s Eleven at 11:00.
