Made in CNY movement

DEWITT, NY (WSYR-TV) - What started as a holiday store in Shoppingtown Mall has turned into a business that will promote the "buy local" movement all year.

The Made in CNY store has everything from fudge to jewelry to one-of a kind artwork and is keeping much-needed dollars in our local economy.

Nikki Newhart is just one of 15 small business owners that now sell their products in the retail space at Shoppingtown Mall.

She turns hand-cut sheets of glass into an eclectic fusion of modern art.

It is a process that could take days, but for her the customer satisfaction makes it all worth it.

"The compliments people have gotten from the stuff is; 'oh we've never seen anything like that before,' said Newhart.

In a space across from Newhart is Wallace Johnson's Limestone Joinery. Inspired by the imagery of Limestone Creek in Fayetteville, Johnson turns rough cut lumber into handcrafted home décor.

"Mainly cutting boards are glued together no mechanical fasteners and it takes a lot of time but it is rewarding," said Johnson.

But there's more than just artwork to be found in The Made in CNY store.

"I make organic treats made out of oats and other wholesome ingredients," said Nathan Lutz, owner of Green Lakes Barkery.

Lutz has created a unique brand that promotes a healthy lifestyle for pets.

"I started Green Lakes Barkery about a year and a half because I have a dog who has a lot of allergies and I found myself making a lot of his treats for him," said Lutz.
