Making guns with 3D printers would be illegal under bill planned by Sen. Schumer

Sen. Schumer says a 3D printer made a fully functional handgun last week and because it’s made of plastic, it can slip through metal detectors.
Washington, DC (CNN/WSYR-TV) - 3D printers are hot technology right now and Sen. Charles Schumer is taking aim at what they can do.

Schumer says one of the machines made a fully functional handgun last week and because it’s made of plastic, it can slip through metal detectors.

Schumer wants the gun making to be illegal.

"Now anyone, a terrorist, someone who's mentally ill, a spousal abuser, a felon can essentially open a gun factory in their garage. And, the only thing they need a computer and a little over a thousand dollars. No background check and you don't even need to leave your house to make hundreds of these guns," Schumer said.

Schumer and Rep. Steve Israel are planning to introduce the Undetectable Firearms Modernization Act.
