Man injured by Westcott Theater’s falling ceiling recalls chaotic night

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Multiple people were injured during a concert at the Westcott Theater Tuesday night when part of the ceiling came falling down.

Three people were sent to the hospital and Wednesday night’s performance had to be rescheduled for January 15, 2013 (see details below).

What was supposed to be a night of fun at a sold-out Dada Life concert with friends, turned out to be one of the worst nights of Richie Calabro’s life, when part of the ceiling came crashing down.

“It was about 10 minutes left in the concert and we're all standing there and having a great time and all of a sudden this boom came down on us and it just hit me and my two friends next to me and I didn't know what it was at first, I thought it was someone going crowd surfing and getting thrown,” said Calabro.

But it was actually chunks of concrete that fell directly on Calabro’s head.

“The cement above, it crashed through the whole thing and at first people were saying it was a ceiling fan, but it wasn't a ceiling fan, it was actual blocks that came crashing down,” he said.

Calabro added, “It was chaos because all the kids just started running out of the Westcott and the ambulances couldn't get down the curb.”

In an instant, cuts and bruises covered his body and the top of his head was split open.

“I felt something dripping down my face and I thought it was water because it was really hot and sweaty in there and I looked at my hand and it was covered in blood and I was like, ‘oh my God,'” Calabro said.

He was rushed to Upstate University Hospital, where he stayed until about 4:00 in the morning.

“I got 20 staples in my head last night and I got a CAT scan this morning. Everything's good with my brain and spine, so 20 staples and I’ll get those out next week and hopefully no infection,” Calabro said.

NewsChannel 9 did reach out to the Westcott Theater. They haven't returned our calls or emails, but they have apologized on their Facebook page and explain that the theater is a 100-year-old building.

Datsik show rescheduled. Below are details from Westcott Theater's Facebook Page:

"We aren't going to be able to open our doors tonight so we can get the issue with the ceiling resolved.
We tried to make it work, but like we stated earlier today the safety of our patrons, artist and staff has to come first. We worked with Datsik's (tonight's performer) team and put together a reschedule date for January 15th 2013. All tickets purchased will be honored at the new date. We appreciate you all standing by and waiting for this announcement and we couldn't thank our patronage enough for their continued support. Stand by on further announcements regarding the shows later this week."
