Oswego (WSYR-TV) -- A memorial is slowly growing where four men were killed in a car crash on Monday in the town of Oswego.

Investigators say 19-year-old Joseph McCarthy was headed west on Engles Road, near Route 7, when his car went off the road and into a ravine.

McCarthy and his three passengers: 20-year-old James Stone, 23-year-old Efrain Rodrigues and Joshua Schute were all found dead on Tuesday morning by a highway worker at around 9:30 a.m.

“I guess the best you can do is just remember them for the good they had in them,” said McCarthy’s friend Matt Parkhurst.

"Me and [Joseph McCarthy] used to run around in the woods back here when we first could walk. We would come down here and go fishing in the creek, never caught a thing,” continued Parkhurst, while at the site where his friend lost his life.

Whether dropping off flowers or simply taking a peek out of the window, a steady flow of people, including Efrain Rodriguez’s aunt, stopped by to catch a glimpse of the scene and mourn four young men taken too soon.

"He was just a wonderful, wonderful kid. Always made you smile, you know. He's just going to be....missed, a lot,” said Rodriguez’s aunt.

Evidence of where the car went off the road was still visible on Wednesday. Orange spray paint traces the tire marks. The broken tree limbs tell the rest of the story, as that car continued on and into a ravine, unnoticed until Tuesday morning.

Investigators say speed was a factor in the crash. Parkhurst told us McCarthy wouldn’t be the first to speed along the roller-coaster like Engles Road.

"Everybody's done it. Everybody comes over the hills and catches air. You know, you get that butterfly feeling in your stomach. Everyone's done it. People have done it with kids in their car. [It was] just a freak accident,” Parkhurst told NewsChannel 9.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating, trying to determine exactly why McCarthy went off the road, how fast he was going and where he was headed.
